In today’s day and age we read about so many things that are bad for us, especially in the food industry. Most of these ingredients are causing cancer or some kind of illness.

So what can we do to make it a little better for our health?  For one we can read up on the facts and gain a little more knowledge which is always a plus and we can learn to read labels to avoid most of the bad stuff.  Let me name but a few of these” bad” ingredients:  Aspartame, Corn syrup, Maltodextrin, and MSG. We can have a whole article just about them, but not today.

Luckily there are a few simple things we can do to look after our health. We can eat more fresh and organic food, not that organic are always easy to find, I know, but the good news is that you have things in your kitchen that is way easier to find. There are so many great natural remedies for so many aches and pains and illnesses, I don’t even know where to start.

Would it not be nice to be healthy all the time, avoiding doctors and bills and expensive medicines, (which by the way are all chemical anyway)?

One thing I would love to avoid as far as possible is antibiotics, ugh who likes to drink that anyway. Well the good news is there is a little herb called Oregano that is a wonderful natural antibiotic, just like we all know garlic as one of those, but not everyone wants to walk around with a bad breath every day right, so let’s look at Oregano.

This wonderful herb can be taken as a tincture, oil or an oil capsule and you can find it at most health shops around the country.  Oregano oil has wide-reaching health benefits, it is known for helping to prevent and treat infections such as urinary tract infections respiratory infections, yeast infections, parasitic and viral infections and Candida and it is great in boosting the immune system. It is also full of nutrition, especially the ones we want to drink during winter time to avoid catching the flu. (Vitamin A, C, E, Zinc, Magnesium, Calcium, Iron and many more).

A little secret . . . , it also works for Migraines and sinus headaches and the list goes on.

Another thing we can do to keep our bodies happy and healthy is to make sure our pH is balanced. Disease and disorder, they say, cannot take root in a body whose pH is in balance.

The remedy for this is also in your kitchen, and it is called Apple cider vinegar, lemon juice and baking soda. Don’t worry; you can make it taste better with some raw honey.

When we have too much acid in our body’s  and our pH is out of balance we tend to have aches and pains in our joints, frequent colds and also inflammation to name a few. You can take Apple Cider Vinegar with warm water and a teaspoon of honey in the morning and evening. You may like to take fresh lemon juice in hot or cold water, or you can also try lemon juice with a teaspoon of baking soda. Whatever suits you taste. All of these easy remedies also kill of cancer cells. We all want that!

Let’s have a look at some more benefits for ACV and Lemon juice.

Lemon juice reduces mucus and phlegm, aids in weight loss, boost energy, reduces inflammation and it is also antibacterial and antiviral. It also hydrates your body and improves digestion.

Apple cider vinegar promotes good gut bacteria, fights allergies, aids in weight loss, fights colds and relieves constipation.

Baking soda reduces muscle pain, relieves heartburn, improves kidney function and it also prevents cancer. Baking soda is known to increase the pH of acidic tumors without affecting the pH balance of healthy tissues and the blood.

So many more reasons to make one of these three your favourite drink.

Don’t we all know varicose veins on our legs or cold hands and feet, yes, and why is this you may ask, because of bad blood circulation! Poor blood circulation can affect the entire body, including the brain, heart, liver, kidneys and the limbs. It can be a contributing factor in a variety of health problems. Believe it or not but the remedy for this is also in your kitchen. How wonder full is nature. Ginger and Cayenne pepper to the rescue.  Ginger contains compounds like gingerols and zingerone that have a warming effect on the body, resulting in good blood circulation. Cayenne pepper contains capsaicin that helps stimulate the proper flow of blood throughout the body and organs. It also strengthens the arteries and capillaries.

I can already see some of you making a shopping list with all the products mentioned if not already in your kitchen. I will give a great recipe at the end of the article containing most of the ingredients.

Now that we have looked at all the remedies for internal ailments, what about some remedies for our external ailments.

Another little miracle from nature is essential oils made from natural organic plants and a little goes a long way. Most of the oils are widely available from your local health shop or any Dischem in your area.

Peppermint oil works wonders for a headache or just a lift me up. Infuse some peppermint oil for sinus relief, it will unclog the sinuses and offer relief for scratchy throats.

Lavender oil is great for a good night sleep and stress relief. It reduces scarring and blemishes, great for acne and eczema.

Rosemary oil works those sore muscles; you can combine it with peppermint oil for a cooling effect. It is great for stimulating hair growth, just add a few drops to your shampoo.

Always remember to dilute essential oils into carrier oil before applying it to your skin. You can use, coconut, olive or jojoba oil, all of these also carries wonderful properties for the skin.

Last but not least, that recipe that I promised:

1 glass of warm / hot water

1 tbs ASV

1 tbs lemon juice

1 tsp ginger

1 tsp cinnamon

1 dash cayenne pepper

1 tsp raw honey

Mix it all together and enjoy warm. This is also a great detox drink.

Enjoy making your own homemade remedies to keep you hip and healthy.
I will be back soon with more natural healing ways.
